MAILTOOL Now Allows Email Redirection for Development and Testing

eMail Tool (MAILTOOL) v13.00 and up now includes settings that allow you to redirect emails to a specific recipient or list of recipients.  This feature was requested as a way to test the email features but without actually delivering the emails to the specified recipients, and instead to a predefined set of controlled recipients (such as an internal email address or group).

This redirection can be done system wide, or at a command level.

The MAILTOOL Redirect (MLTREDIR) command brings up a page with settings that allow you to control the redirection at a system level.

                       MAILTOOL Redirect Settings

  Redirect Setting: *NO (*NO/*YES)

      Config File: *DFT

        Recipient: *DFT

Press F6 to save your settings.

 F3=Exit   F5=Refresh   F6=Save Settings

The Redirect Settings turns on or off system wide redirection.  This can also be manually set by changing the value of data area MLTREDIR.

The Config File option allows you to specify a specific configuration file to use for the redirected emails.  This can also be set manually using the MLTRDCFG data area.  This value can be *DFT (which will use the configuration file on the MAILTOOL command) or a specific configuration file.  See this article for more information on how configuration files work with MAILTOOL.

The Recipient option allows you to specify the recipient(s) to redirect the emails too.  This can also be manually set using the data area MLTRDRECIP.  This value can be *DFT (which will use the recipient on the command) or a specific email address or MAILTOOL distribution list entry.  See this article for more information on how MAILTOOL distribution lists work.

These settings can also set (or overridden) at the command or ILE function level.

When using the command, these parameters control the redirection:

Redirect Email (REDIR) . . . . . . . . *DFT *DFT, *YES, *NO
Redirect Recipient (REDIRTO) . . . . . *DFT
Redirect Config File (REDIRCFG). . . . *DFT

When using the ILE functions these settable values (using mailtool_setValue()) control the redirection:

redirect_email
redirect_recipient
redirect_config

These settings are currently available when sending email using MAILTOOL Plus (*MAILTOOL) and the GreenTools for Google Apps Send Email (G4GSMAIL) addon (*G4GSMAIL) only, not GreenTools for Microsoft Apps Send Email addon (*G4MSMAIL).

Hopefully these new features will give more control and functionality over email on your IBM i.  As always, feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or ideas.

More details can be found in the MAILTOOL documentation.
